Participation in the 1st Annual Wilson’s Wave 5K is about more than running (or walking) to the
finish line. It’s about choosing healthy outlets for stress and standing together in the fight against
the fentanyl crisis.
One of the most dangerous aspects of fentanyl is its presence in counterfeit prescription pills,
often sold on social media and other digital platforms. Alarmingly, nearly half of teenagers are
unaware that these fake pills can contain deadly doses of fentanyl. As more young people turn
to self-medication for stress relief, this knowledge gap can lead to tragic consequences.
Although some progress has been made in reducing overdose deaths, fentanyl remains a
severe threat, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Spreading awareness and
educating those around us can play a crucial role in preventing loss of life.
This 5K event highlights the connection between mental health and substance use, and how
moments of vulnerability can leave individuals and families at risk of the devastating impact of
fentanyl. It’s about creating ripples of awareness that can save lives.
Description of food & drink and post-race activities:
Water will be provided along the route and at the end of the race.

- $45 on race day

Free visitor parking is available on the William Peace University campus, located on the left immediately after turning into the main entrance off N. Blount Street. Additional nearby options include street parking on Delway Street and paid, public parking decks at the State Government Complex on N. Salisbury Street.
